They Heard From US
It never ceases to amaze me how my daughter can utter words that bring me to a standstill. Have you ever experienced that sudden pause, that double take, when your child says something profound? The other day, she spontaneously started singing "My Story, Your Glory" by Matthew West – a cherished song we recently listened to in the car. Her recitation caught me off guard, and it got me thinking: Where did she pick that up? Where do they hear these things?
The answer, of course, is us. In this instance, it's a positive example, a reflection of the uplifting music we share. Yet, it's a reminder that they absorb not only the good but also the challenging aspects of our lives. If we curse, they hear it. If we express anger and frustration, they hear that too.
This serves as a gentle reminder that our kids are constant observers and listeners. Maria Montessori, of the Authentic Institute of Montessori, shared that “From birth to (approximately) age six, your child’s brain works in a very different way than an adult’s does. At this age, her mind is like a sponge, soaking up huge amounts of information from her environment. She is absorbing everything around her, effortlessly, continuously, and indiscriminately.” This is what Maria referred to as “the absorbent mind.”
Children are perpetual learners, always observant, and like open vessels eager to be filled. The question then becomes: What words will they absorb, and what wisdom will we impart? The responsibility is profound, as every interaction becomes a building block in shaping their understanding of the world.
Let's be mindful of the messages we convey, knowing that our words and actions become the soundtrack of their early years. In every conversation, in every moment, we have the power to influence and shape their minds. Let's make it a symphony of positivity, love, and wisdom that resonates in their hearts for a lifetime.
